Arlen Specter and the Patriots

I'm going to be honest right up front, I am a Patriot fan. Now that that is out of the way let's talk about Sen. Specter and his calling for football hearings. Does he not have anything better to do? How about solving the energy problem, you know the fact that we don't drill our own oil and the price is going through the roof! How about all the judges that are still not confirmed, is he not on the judicial committee? How about the illegal immigration problems? Inflation? Making the Bush tax cuts permanent? With all the things he could be focusing his attention on, why football?
The football commission has been checking into the issue of the illegal taping of the hand signals of the opposing coaches, but not to the degree Sen. Specter would like. Does it really matter to we the people? All the teams watch the hand signals, and maybe they tape too, they just didn't get caught. Besides, the Patriots got punished enough. I mean, 18-1, with the 1 being the super bowl, that's the true essence of what goes around comes around.
Please enlighten me if you think this is important. It costs so much money, taxpayer money, to have these hearings, and it is irrelevant to the running of this country. The same should be said for the baseball and steroids hearings. Let the clubs take care of this business, it plays out in the market place. When families stop taking their children to games and players become less important they will get the message. These players are no less flawed than anyone else, the government can't make them perfect, just as they can't make themselves perfect.

Amen. Boys and their games. We have serious energy supply problems, but the lawyers want to investigate Sports league's.
I'd have a problem if Barry Bonds were doing commercials for anabolic steroids, or teaching our kids that "Cheating is Okay, we all do it." We, the Moms of the world, that's our job to handle not the Governments.

I agree! Too many people want to push our responsibilities on the government.

This is political pandering at its worst.

Instead of providing leadership on the big issues we face as a people, Senator Specter is pandering to "Steelers fans" (which he stated recently).

However, most true sports fans I talk to (including during the Congressional baseball steroid hearings) see through this crap and have the same opinion. My favorite line from a Stahley's bar regular was "These a**holes can't run the country and they want to run baseball?"

Ah, the wisdom of those of us who work hard to support such government idiocy and the politician who pocket our money.

Steelers fans? He's pandering to Eagles fans since he himself is an Eagles fan. He wants that Super Bowl that the NFL handed to the New England over the Eagles. More power to him. No, I don't think "everyone does it" but I do think Belechek cheated and the NFL is attempting to cover it up so as not to tarnish the game. Look at the recent Walsh interview with Goodell. After it was over, Goodell conveniently said no new info was found and he considered the matter closed. No mention of why Goodell had the videos and textual documentation of the cheating destroyed. Specter wants to know what the NFL is covering up and why. Since the federal government graciously gives the NFL an anti-trust exemption, it is fully acceptable to look into the alleged cheating. But no, lets just forget it ever happened and forget that the Patriots won three Super Bowls by a total of nine points. Let's look over the allegations that the Patriots taped the Rams pre-Super Bowl practices.

I personally find the endless steroid investigations much more baseless regarding federal intervention.

So Captain, it is your premise that it is the job of the United States Senate to investigate if someone cheated playing a game?

While we are at war, oil is skyrocketing, all major social welfare programs will be bankrupt in 20 years, and all the other issues that we face and 100 United States Senators should spend time to see if someone cheated at a game?

Madison, Jefferson, et al are crying about what we have produced.

Joe, yes, "oil is skyrocketing". What exactly do you expect the federal government to do? The facts are that supply is growing more slowly than demand; prices go up; any attempt to meddle with these fundamental forces will result in unintended consequences, all of which will make matters worse. Or, are you suggesting that the federal government confiscate the private property of oil companies and redistribute it to the citizens? That worked great in the USSR......

Captain, last year the Patriots lost the super bowl, again, can the punishment be any worse for them?
Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Joe Hilliard - The NFL is a BILLION dollar industry which benefits from a rate federal anti-trust exemption. Are you stating that the federal government should not be involved in regulating any industry?

Lower Mack - The federal government could intercede in the oil speculation markets. That is where the gouging is occurring much the same way Enron gouged consumers during the 1990's. Most everyone is in jail at this point.

Smart Blonde - How is the fact that the Patriots lost to a superior team in the Super Bowl a punishment?
